Smriti Mandhana is a famous Indian cricketer. She plays for the Indian women’s national team as a left-handed opening batter and an occasional right-arm off-break bowler. Early Life and Childhood
Smriti Mandhana was born to Shrinivas Mandhana and Smiti Mandhana on 18 July 1996 in Mumbai, India. When she was only two years of age, she, along with her parents and brothers, shifted to Madhavnagar, Sangli, in Maharashtra. She completed her school studies till 12th standard in Sangli and then was admitted to Chintaman Rao College of Commerce, which is also in Sangli, to pursue a bachelor’s in Commerce. Her father used to play district-level cricket for Sangli. Smriti got interested in cricket after seeing her brother, Shravan Mandhana, play Under-16 cricket at Maharashtra State competitions. Even now, her family plays an active part in helping Smriti stay at the top of the game. Domestic Career
Smriti made a name for himself and impressed the Indian team selectors by scoring a double-century playing for Maharashtra against Gujarat in a West Zone Under-19 Tournament one-day match. She became the first woman ever to achieve this record. Then later in the Women’s Challenger Trophy in 2016, playing for the India Red team, she scored three consecutive half-centuries, helping her team lift the trophy and becoming the highest run-getter in the tournament.
She received a 1-year contract from Brisbane Heat for the 2016-17 season of the Big Bash League. Since then, she has participated in various franchisee leagues all over the world, including the Kia Super League and The Hundred. Playing for Sydney Thunders in the 2021-22 season of the Women’s Big Bash League, Smriti scored a century for her team and became the joint-record holder for the highest score ever made in the history of the tournament. She has also participated in the Women Indian Premier League tournament matches and has played a crucial role in winning the tournament for her team, Trailblazers.
International Career
After performing exceptionally well in the domestic circuit, Smriti made her debut for the Indian team in a series against Bangladesh. She represented her country for the first time against Bangladesh in a T20I match on 5 April 2013 in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. She opened the innings and scored a vital 39 runs to help India post a respectable score against the visiting team. Also, she made her ODI debut in the same series, on 10 April 2013, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. She was only able to score 25 runs while batting at the no.3 position.
Mandhana was included in the Indian squad for the 2014 England Tour. On her Test debut, she scored a total of 73 runs, helping her team chase down the target and win the match against England on 13 August 2014. In 2016, on India’s tour of Australia, Smriti scored her first century in ODI cricket, scoring 102 runs off 109 deliveries. Due to her splendid performances, she became the only cricketer from India to feature in the ICC Women’s Team of the Year 2016.
She faced a minor setback, sustaining an injury to her ligament while playing in the BBL in January 2017. Smriti couldn’t play for five months and was absent from the Indian squad for the Women’s World Cup Cricket qualifier and a Quadrangular series featuring India, South Africa, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. In the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, she made her comeback for India in the first group stage match against the English team. She scored 90 runs and was awarded the Player of the Match award for helping India start their World Cup Campaign with a win.
In the year 2018, Smriti scored a half-century in just 30 deliveries against Australia in a WT20I Tri-Nation series.
