Have you ever owned a business? If not, why not? We’ve all heard the saying “all great companies were started by women”. But are some of these famous entrepreneurs from the past just that…famous? Are they still creating today or have they retired? In order to answer this question (and many more) we created a short list of the most famous women entrepreneurs.

  • Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential and successful women entrepreneurs in the world. She has been a global media giant for decades, with her talk show, and other business ventures. She is also an author and philanthropist who has helped millions of people through her work. Winfrey was born into poverty in Mississippi. She started her career as a reporter at local TV stations and then went on to become one of America’s most successful television personalities and entrepreneurs. In 2004 she founded OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, which airs worldwide on cable, satellite and OTT platforms like Netflix. She has also set up her own company under the name of Harpo Productions. She is also known as the queen of daytime talk shows and talk shows. 

  • Susan Wojcicki

Susan Wojcicki is the CEO of Youtube, which has become the biggest video platform in the world. She was born on July 5, 1968, in San Francisco, California. She graduated from Harvard University and earned a master’s degree from UCLA Anderson School of Management. Wojcicki started working at Google as a software engineer and later became Director of Product Search at YouTube before taking charge of YouTube in early 2014. She is one of the few women who have achieved immense success in the technology industry. Wojcicki is also known for her work on artificial intelligence, machine learning, search and advertising. 

  • Kiran Mazumdar Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar is the originator of one of the most disruptive business ideas in India at the time. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is a woman who doesn’t want to be defined by her gender.

She is the founder of Biocon, India’s largest biopharma company which was founded in 1978. Mazumdar Shah has been named one of the most influential women entrepreneurs in the world. She is also known for her work in the field of stem cell research. 

Mazumdar was born in Bangalore, India. As an undergraduate student at Bangalore University, she was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Botany and Zoology. 

  • Beyonce

Beyonce is a famous singer and actress, who has been in the entertainment industry for over twenty years. She started her career as a child model and went on to become one of the most successful recording artists of all time. She has won numerous awards and received several nominations for her work in music, television and film.

In addition to being successful as an artist, Beyonce is also a businesswoman who owns several clothing lines and has launched various brands that offer accessories like jewellery, footwear and handbags. She has also created her own line of beauty products such as skin care products and perfumes that are sold online via the Beyhive website.

Arianna Huffington is a writer, entrepreneur and the co-founder of the Huffington Post. She is also the author of 12 books. She is one of the most influential women entrepreneurs in the world.

Huffington was born in Athens, Greece to a Greek father and an English mother. She moved to England when she was four years old. She studied law at Cambridge University and then worked as a literary lawyer for two years before she started her first company, Thrive Global, which has since become one of the largest digital media companies in the world.

She sold Thrive Global in 2010 to AOL for around $15 million and went on to found The Huffington Post with Andrew Breitbart and Kenneth Lerer in 2005. The Huffington Post has grown into a global brand with over 30 million visitors per month and it is now part of AOL’s digital operations division, which makes up more than half of AOL’s total revenue.
